Please join the “Ride of Silence” Wednesday night
What: Bowling Green cyclists will take part in the international “Ride of Silence” Wednesday night to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn’t aware of these rights and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves. At the recent Bowling Green Bike Summit, several people commented that some motorists are hostile to cyclists. Cyclists who have been injured by a motorist are invited to wear a red armband; others are encouraged to wear black armbands. The ride will be 10 – 12 miles, at a slow pace, in a silent procession.
When: Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The ride leaves from Fountain Square Park.
Who: The Bowling Green League of Bicyclists is sponsoring this ride. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. Helmets and front / rear lights are required for all riders.
Why: The goal of the ride is to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials of cyclists’ right to the public roadways and to show respect for those who have been killed or injured while cycling. In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.
