It has been very tempting lately to do what many of us do about this time every election: Turn it all off. No more radio, TV or internet news. I’ve been this close. But I don’t think I can ignore or not say anything about a few of the glaringly obvious and sad things going on around us now. One in particular being this whole “stuck in Iraq” debacle.

I think it has been made painfully clear that Kerry is not a funny man, nor should he try to be for obvious reasons. But I think it has always been clear that Kerry, a decorated vet himself, would have nothing to gain by slandering our troops. Why would he? Do those who continue to bash him about his joke really think he would put down the troops intelligence level? Of course not. It is nothing more than a perfect opportunity for Republicans to inject toxic calumny into what should have been nothing more than an occasion for a bit of fun finger pointing. It is to the Bush administration’s shame that they are carrying on like this, continuing to act as though they are just so shocked, so dismayed, so flabbergasted at Kerry’s “insulting and shameful” remark.

My prediction is that this is just one more thing that will place the Republican party even furthur down in the public’s eyes. Once we get our national wits about us again it will dawn on us that making a freakshow out of Kerry was not the wise political choice.

And one last thing: Look who’s talking.
