Farm Building Detail

It’s been one month and day since I last posted anything on the Block, Street & Building Blog. For shame. It’s not like I don’t have anything to post. In fact, I’ve got a fairly good list going of possible topics - a great list categorized hierarchically by topic, then date found, and finally regionally. Subcategories follow a relevance method of rating. The list is so enormously complicated I’ve decided I’m just going to talk about computer stuff for a minute. Specifically Google’s SketchUp.

I downloaded Google’s free version of SketchUp yesterday and have stormed gleefully through the simple and helpful tutorials since. SketchUp is very easy to use. So easy I really do think just about anybody could use it.

Here are a few pictures of the futuristic farm layout I’ve been working on. Don’t ask my why I picked out a farm to start with.

What you can ask (the same question I’ve been asking myself) is why would anybody need to be excited about some free 3D graphic software. Don’t we all spend enough time at our computers?

My conclusion is that the beauty and merit in this free software is that it can literally be used by anyone. Imagine the convenience for those people out there with an actual good idea that they need to try to sell someone on. The designer of the next human powered water purifier, for instance, for areas without electricity. Or the good people who are rethinking urban development. Naturally, this software will primarily be used by folks creating objects and graphics for Second Life and other virtual entertainment of that sort. But I’m glad to see that now there is a quality 3D modeling program for people who actually need it. I’d love to see what good use people are putting it to. (Instead of people like me who just horse around with hypothetical farms.)

For those interested in going a step further with SketchUp, however, Google sells SketchUp Pro 5 for $495.00 from their website. SketchUp Pro 5 is a more robust version of the free download.
