Contribute!

Be the bird who told us so by publishing progressive, informative content at the Block, Street & Building Blog.Hear ye! Here ye! We are officially on the lookout for a few good contributors. Every good cause needs people like you to tell the world what is up. If you are passionate about social and environmental justice issues, and have something of a knack for writing, we’d love to consider you a volunteer contributor.

What might someone write about on the Block, Street and Building Blog? Here are a few ideas.

  • Living “green” when you’re below the poverty line. Is it possible? Yes? No? Maybe you know someone who is making it possible. Write about it!
  • Why is there still a difference between being an Environmentalist and a Social Justice activist in mainstream environmentalism?
  • Who are the social justice groups in your community and what are they doing?
  • Who is your civil rights hero? Why?
  • Tips on how to access empowering information if you don’t have the internet or a library.
  • Your favorite Social Justice podcast, newspaper, magazine, leader, book, movie, student, etc.
  • Announce an upcoming event. Types of events you could announce are: local group meetings, public forums, citizen lobbying opportunities, volunteer driven events, neighborhood clean-ups, guest speakers or lecturers, relevant church events, things like that.
  • Optimism and uplifting ideas and news rule! Remember, readers love knowing about the good things that are being done about bad situations.

Say SomethingBe the bird – Getting started…
When someone says, “Oh, a little bird told me,” do you ever think of who that bird might have been? Maybe. Maybe not. Regardless, that bird was someone! That’s one of the best things about the internet. Everyone can be that little bird. Whether you’d rather be the kind that chirps sweet, little snippets of information or a crow with a loudspeaker in it’s throat, this is a great place for you to get your song on.

Although not required, it is recommended that you register an account with us before you create a story. An account is totally free and will give us the ability to provide you with better tools for creating and managing your submissions and viewing or editing comments on your published stories. Stories submitted by registered users, however, will still be subject to approval by the BSB administrators.

Registering is quick and painless! After you register and log in for the first time, be sure to fill in your Profile information so that your stories have your personalized author information. Also be sure to change your password to something you can remember. (Write it down!) We respect your privacy and will never sell, rent, trade or give out your information. It is safe here.

Once registered you will be able to use the standard (and more powerful) New Post tools. If you’d rather not register, you may still submit a post by using the information and form below. Your submission, however, will not be published until approved.

1. Content
You will need to add a minimum of Post Title and Post Text. If you have a long or more complex story to submit, it is good practice to edit your story first through a text editor first and then pasting it into the Post Text box when you’re done editing.

2. Adding Tags
Tagging your post helps people and search engines like Google find share and find your story easier. Please add tags to your post, separated by commas. Below are a few examples.

Your Story Is About… You enter tags like:
Kentucky Fried Chicken using cleared Amazon forest for soy fields… KFC, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Amazon, soy, rainforest, corporate social responsibility, deforestation
A new EPA study regarding the links between cancer in communities near nuclear powerplants. nuclear power, energy, cancer, cancer research
New Website Assesses Your Community’s Level of Toxic Exposure. health, community, toxic exposure, research, contamination, pollution

3. Uploading files
If you have any photographs or files that should be included with your story, you may upload them as well. Please include in your Post Content any important information regarding the image you include.

4. Adding Categories
From the drop down menus, please select at least one category for your post. If there is not one that fits your post topic, please choose “Uncategorized” and we will create one or leave it uncategorized.

5. About Your Submission
Your post will be sent for approval immediately. It will only be published upon approval by the BSB Blog folks.

All rights are reserved to: edit, approve, reject, clarify, add to, take away, or otherwise make ready for publication as we see fit. We may seek your approval or thoughts if we plan to make any drastic changes. If you include material or information that is restricted under copyright law, or has specific Creative Commons guidelines, it is your responsibility to let us know, or communicate it in your post. Be nice to the people who create original content. Give credit where credit is due.
