5 Current Environmental Justice Issues
Below I’ve compiled five links to current and on-going environmental justice issues of concern in the US. These are issues we’ll be watching as we move through 2009 and occasionally passing on news about here.
If you’re thinking about becoming an advocate for an issue, these are a few random causes to look into, or you may like to check out the recently revamped EPA website which is far better than it used to be. Way more useful and highly attractive. The EPA has plenty of problems that need addressing, but there are few governmental agencies seek to educate the public as aggressively.
1. Environmental Racism in West Fresno: Having grown up near Fresno in Hanford, California, and known there is a long history of racism and injustice toward workers and residents, I am saddened (yet not entirely surprised) to learn about issues there now. The tremendous amounts of industry and agriculture have compromised the quality of life for many of Fresno’s citizens.
2. Invisible 5: I’ve mentioned the Invisible 5 project here before, though I can not help but bring it up again, it is very inspiring. Another California link. I’m beginning to notice a trend.
3. Fruitvale Transit Village Project: Yes, another California link. Oakland, this time. In this case, however, we’re lucky enough to witness the effective outcome of public input and a willingness to abandon unhealthy or poorly planned projects.
4. Riviera Beach: The Riviera Beach community in Florida has been dealing with the cancer-causing chemicals of Honeywell and Solitron Devices in their water for over twenty years. Finally some progress and vindication.
5. EPA enforcement in Arkansas continues to cut pollution: Continued efforts to lower pollution in Arkansas means greater justice for all.
That’s all for now, folks. Keep your eyes out for more lists like this. If you’d like more lists from this site, you may like to check out this post from the past.
